Western Isles Self Catering
The Western Isles (na h-Eileanan Siar in Gaelic) is a long island group of more than 200 islands off the west coast of Scotland. Separated from the Scottish mainland by a stretch of water known as the Minch, the Western Isles stretch a distance of 209km (130 miles) from the Butt of Lewis (in the north) to Barra Head (in the south). Along the east coast the scenery is a myriad of rocky coves and inlets but on the west coast the islands take on a more romantic appearance of numerous white to golden beaches fringing lush machair of fertile grassland decorated with a multitude of wildflowers.
Western Isles self catering accommodation is available in a broad range of property types. Typical of the islands is the traditional crofthouse which is a solid two storey building with thick stone walls. Usually such accommodation is whitewashed but some are pebble-dashed in Skye marble which has a pink tint to it. In recent years there has been a move towards the provision of more stylised accommodation. Such self catering accommodation is always of the highest quality (5 star in most cases) and one of the most interesting is the blackhouse at Borvemore, Scarista on the Isle of Harris.
