Western Isles Hotels

Stornoway Harbour on the ISle of Lewis in the Western Isles of ScotlandThe Western Isles of Scotland are a unique group of islands in the North Atlantic ocean. Once part of the Norse and Manx empires many of the place names are of Norse, or Norse/Gaelic influence. Indeed the culture of the Western Isles, although described as wholly Gaelic in nature, has, at time, a certain element of the Scandinavian about it. With such a strong culture it should be of little surprise that it is now policy of the local Council to name streets and places in the Gaelic language. Unfortunately this can cause some confusion for the visitor but most signs have an English translation below (albeit in slightly smaller writing). Although the native language of the Western Isles is Gaelic, and you will hear it often, almost all Hebrideans have English as their second, and sometimes their first, language.

To help you plan your Western Isles vacation we have listed some of the finest hotel accommodation in the Western Isles below.

Hotel Accommodation on the Isle of Lewis

Royal Hotel, Stornoway, Isle of LewisThe Royal Hotel, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Western Isles

As you can see, by our photograph to the left, the Royla Hotel in Stornoway oozes character. Built around 1850 the Royal Hotel has seen many of the islands most important visitors enjoy their comforts. While the hotel has managed to retain many of it's period features in the front facing rooms (which look out onto the harbour and cross to Lews castle) the Royal is an altogether modern hotel. This is most evident in their highly popular HS1 Cafe Bar which is something of a hit with the locals and highly popular with tourists. If you enjoy more sedate surroundings when eating their Boatshed Restaurant has a fine reputation for serving high quality cuisine.

Cabarfeidh Hotel, Stornoway, Isle of LewisThe Caberfeidh Hotel, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, Western Isles

Another Stornoway hotel known for it's fine food is the excellent Caberfeidh Hotel. The Caberfeidh has a long held reputation for being Stornoway's finest hotel so it should come as little surprise that they excel at cuisine as well as service and comfort. Set back off the road, on the outskirts of town, the Caberfeidh has beautiful well kept gardens and, although they feature fine mature trees, if you enjoy natural beauty then you should really find time to take a walk in the Lews Castle grounds found opposite the hotel.
