South Uist Accommodation
While North Uist rocky, and rather like the Isle of Harris, the island of South Uist is a more gentle environment of machair and beaches. Of course on the east coast of South Uist there is a range of mountains, with the largest, Beinn Mhor at 2034ft, but it is the myriad of small lochans, large expanses of moorland and machair and about 20 miles of sandy beaches that are most associated with the island.
In complete contrast to the Islands of Lewis, Harris and North Uist, the island of South Uist remains largely Roman Catholic in faith. The fact that the Reformation failed to gain a foothold there is evident by the number of small shrines and larger religious monuments dotted about the area. The modern, and huge, Madonna, Our Lady of the Isles, stands a short walk from the main road and is a modern statue depicting Mary and baby Jesus.
The photograph shows one of the lovely homes which can be found in the small village of Howmore on South Uist. A rather messy and unorganised collection of quaint cottages, Howmore should be high on your list of places to visit while in the Western Isles.
Over the next few months we will be adding a selection of accommodation on the islands of South Uist.
